Basic Digital Skills
Slave Lake Adult Education offers Basic Digital Skills classes and one-on-one tutoring. This is to help people learn the basic skills they need to use technology. The course is usually 5 hours. It can be on a variety of technology from computers to smartphones.
Learner’s Permit in Clear Language
Learner’s Permit in Clear Language is designed to help adults who are struggling to pass the learner’s permit written test. The course includes the information from the Alberta Drivers’ Guide with a focus on clear language. It also includes test taking tips and other skills for learning.
The Learner’s Permit course takes 18 hours, over the course of a few weeks or weekends.
If we have the instructors, Slave Lake Adult Education may also offer the course for teenagers.
English as a Second Language
Slave Lake Adult Education has daytime and evening English as a Second Language classes. These are mixed level and include reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The classes are a safe place to improve your English.
If necessary and time allows, we also offer one-on-one tutoring.
There are fall, winter, spring, and sometimes summer classes.
Basic Math
Slave Lake Adult Education offers class and one-on-one tutoring for adults who need to improve their math. Class levels vary. They go from simple addition and subtraction to Grade 9 level, depending on the learner’s level.
Math concepts build on each other, so if a learner missed some concepts in elementary school, they will struggle all their lives. Basic Math is designed to help learners recognize where their math skills are, remember the skills they learned in school, and learn the ones that they missed.
Basic Math is 18 hours over the course of several weeks but can be shortened or lengthened depending on learner’s needs.
Learning on Location
Slave Lake Adult Education is working with partner organizations to offer classes and workshops in various locations in Slave Lake, Smith, and Kinuso. These focus on skills for learning, which include:
- Recognizing oneself as a learner
- Taking risks in learning
- Actively engaging in the act of learning
- Developing learning strategies
- Building collaboration skills in learning
- Strengthening communication skills in learning.
Supporting Culture
Slave Lake Adult Education and partners aims to offer a few workshops each year to support local cultures. In 2026-27, the focus is on Ribbon Skirt Making to support the Cree and Métis cultures. Lesser Slave Lake is part of Treaty 8 and Métis District 21.
Slave Lake Adult Education serves the areas between Kinuso and Smith, which includes two First Nations and many Indigenous people who live off reserve. The communities served by Slave Lake Adult Education are Kinuso, Swan River First Nation, Assineau, Canyon Creek, Widewater, Wagner, Slave Lake, Sawridge First Nation, the M.D. of Lesser Slave River, Smith, and Flatbush.
Most courses are offered in Slave Lake, with a few in Smith and Kinuso.
Slave Lake Adult Education is interested in partners to offer more cultural workshops to support the diverse cultures in the region.
Write Right
Write Right teaches adults the basics of writing. It includes writing examples, grammar, and basic skills to improve your writing. The topics include prepositions, subjects, verbs, and commas.
Write Right is an 18-hour course over the course of a few weeks.
Helping Adults with Reading
Helping Adults with Reading is designed to help adults who struggle with reading. We can help anyone from someone who doesn’t read at all to adults who just find it difficult. This course is most often offered one-on-one, but it can be a course if there are enough learners interested.
This course is for native English speakers. English as a Second Language learner who want to improve their English language reading or who want to learn how to read would join an English as a Second Language class.
CAEC and Trades Entrance Readiness
In Canada, the GED is now called the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC). Slave Lake Adult Education supports adults as they start their journey to write the CAEC exam or the trades entrance exam. The program starts with a math and literacy assessment. Depending on a learner’s level, they may join a Basic Math class, Write Right, Helping Adults Learn to Read, or a CAEC preparation course through NorQuest.
Slave Lake Adult Education will support the learners throughout the process.
Food Safety
Slave Lake offers in person food safety certificate course a couple of times a year. Participants learn about food borne illnesses, basic food safety, the flow of food, personal hygiene, receiving and storing food, service, cleaning and sanitizing, food temperatures, and cooking.
This course is not funded through Community Adult Learning Program, so it costs the learner. However, if the course fee is a financial barrier, it can be waived.
